Prime Minister Robert Abela, accompanied by Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela, visited the operating theatres at Mater Dei Hospital to observe firsthand how the government's record investment in the health sector is leading to more operations and improved services for Maltese and Gozitan patients.

During his visit to the Operating Theatres section, the Prime Minister met with patients scheduled for surgery that day and spoke with surgeons as they prepared for their procedures. He also viewed the hospital's advanced robotic surgery equipment, which has contributed to lower complication rates and faster recovery times.

Abela also toured the hospital's administration building, which is currently undergoing extensive renovation and conversion into two new wards providing 47 beds.

Over the past year, the number of surgical operations has risen sharply thanks to investments in robotic surgery and outsourcing agreements with private hospitals. In 2025, procedures such as hip and knee replacements increased significantly - knee replacements alone rose to 890, compared to 390 in 2024. Endoscopy procedures exceeded 13,000, marking an increase of nearly 2,400 over the previous year. This growth was driven by the introduction of advanced techniques like Capsule Endoscopy, which allows internal imaging through a swallowable capsule, eliminating the need for sedation or discomfort.

These advancements were made possible through substantial government investment in healthcare. Last year, the government invested €14 million in a collaboration system between public and private healthcare providers, reducing waiting times for various procedures, including orthopaedic surgeries, hernia operations, and radiological scans such as CTs and MRIs.

For the upcoming year, the government's capital investment in health is set to rise by 4%, reaching €107 million. The 2026 budget will fund three major projects: a 300-bed hospital at San Vinċenz de Paul, a new mental health hospital, and an expansion of the Emergency Department.

Prime Minister Abela stated, "This unprecedented investment in healthcare is a clear demonstration of a government that places people at the centre of its policy. For every additional operation we perform and every patient who recovers faster, we are improving the quality of life for Maltese and Gozitan families."

He also praised healthcare professionals for their daily dedication and commitment, ensuring Malta's health system continues to deliver top-quality service.
