Prime Minister Robert Abela has effectively ruled out an early election.

Abela said that there is a five-year mandate and that an election is called when the  national interest dictates. But he went onto say that "if you were to ask me today, I will say there is no national interest dictating the need for an early election."

He spoke during an interview with Times of Malta editor-in-chief Herman Grech.

Abela said that Christmas is approaching and people should enjoy the festive season. He also mentioned that he is not seeing any slow-down in businesses and that today he is seeing no reason to call an early election.

"I am focussed on implementing the 1,000 pledges in our electoral manifesto," the prime minister said.

Referring to the planning reform, Abela said that the Cabinet Sub-Committee is analysing the reactions that it receives, saying that they have not yet concluded the proposal, especially when it comes to Bill 143. He said that the Government wants to find convergence.

Asked about Alex Borg, Abela described Alex Borg as the third PN leader in 6 years. "I respect my political adversary. I never veer into the personal, I always debate the argument. I never underestimate anyone."

He said that on serious issues... like generic medicines, Borg made some "dangerous statements" that could impact patients and industries.
