Leader of the Opposition and of the PN Alex Borg took part in an Extraordinary Informal Summit of the European People's Party (EPP) on Wednesday, convened by EPP President Manfred Weber.

The meeting, held online, aimed to discuss the latest developments related to the conflict in Ukraine while strengthening the common position of the EPP's member parties.

Participants included, among others, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen; President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, several Prime Ministers and Deputy Prime Ministers, as well as Leaders of the Opposition from political parties in EU Member States forming part of the EPP political family.

The PN said that it supports Malta's position in favour of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity and agrees with the EPP's clear message that Ukraine's future must be decided by Ukraine itself, not by Russia. "This fundamental principle must remain central to Europe's position and to all diplomatic processes."

"With regard to the conflict in Ukraine, the European Union must remain united. Political, economic, and humanitarian support to Ukraine must remain strong to ensure a peace that provides long-term security for the Ukrainian people. Instability in Europe has a direct impact on the Mediterranean and on Malta, particularly in the areas of resources, migration, and regional security," the party said.

The PN and the EPP called on Europe to continue defending the rules-based international order and not to yield to pressure for any agreement that would give advantage to aggressors.

Borg was accompanied by the PN's International Secretary Beppe Galea.
