Hamrun Spartans continue to write the history of a Maltese club in Europe with a historic victory.
The Maltese champions, Hamrun Spartans, have done it once again. In a season that is already historic for them, having become the first Maltese club to advance to the league phase of one of UEFA's three club competitions, this evening they added another milestone that will remain etched in the history of Maltese football.
Under the guidance of Giovanni Modica, the players overturned a deficit into a victory against Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar, scoring their first ever goals at this stage and collecting their first three points. They concluded the match from matchday four of the UEFA Conference League with a final score of 3-1.
Without question, Hamrun Spartans deserved the win, but achieving it required significant effort, especially considering the scoring chances they missed in the first half. Although the Maltese controlled the game but not the scoreline, in the second half they pushed decisively for a goal, which would be their first in this phase of the competition after failing to score in their first three matches.
For all the missed opportunities by the Spartans, it was the opponents from Gibraltar who opened the scoring in the fifty-seventh minute. Bernardo Lopes controlled the ball on his chest and finished past Henry Bonello, placing Hamrun Spartans at a disadvantage.
It was a goal that understandably generated anger, disappointment and frustration among the Hamrun side, and it was at this point that Modica's squad demonstrated its qualities, particularly the personality of a united and determined team intent on recovering from a deficit.
Six minutes after the Red Imps' goal, the Maltese were handed a lifeline that Hamrun Spartans were astute enough to exploit. In the sixty-third minute, Torilla was shown a second yellow card, leaving his team with ten men.
This proved to be the moment of truth for Hamrun Spartans, and they could not afford to waste it. They responded immediately, turning their numerical advantage into a goal just two minutes after the dismissal. Koffi advanced effectively down the left and played the ball to El Fanis, who, from close range, placed it past goalkeeper Hankins. It was the first historic goal ever scored by a Maltese team at this stage of a European competition.
This was the goal the Hamrun side required, as it boosted their confidence and renewed their belief that they could win the match. With roughly a quarter of an hour remaining, in the seventy-fourth minute, the Hamrun supporters erupted in a single shout of joy as Smajlagic concluded a move with a header into the net for the lead.
With the score at 2-1 and around fifteen minutes left, tension among the players and supporters of Hamrun Spartans was considerable. The emotion and fear of letting the victory slip away were real, especially when in the seventy-ninth minute they too were reduced to ten men, as Vincenzo Polito received a second yellow card. Both teams then had to manage the decisive final minutes with ten players each.
Lincoln Red Imps, with nothing to lose and trailing, threw everything into attack. Such an approach carries risks, and that is precisely what transpired. Hamrun Spartans defended intelligently and, in added time, won the ball in their own defensive area before breaking rapidly towards the opposing goal. In this transitional move, Smajlagic passed the ball to Coric, who completed the spectacle for the Hamrun faithul with a third goal, confirming the victory the Maltese had been striving for.
The final score of 3-1 sparked major celebrations among Hamrun Spartans, as in an already memorable season they added further unprecedented achievements with their first three points in this league phase. These points may prove crucial, giving the Maltese side hope that they can still qualify for the next stage of the UEFA Conference League, with two matchdays left to play.
