Launch of the book 'Islands in a Continent' on Malta’s EU experience

Saturday, 29 November 2025, 09:10 Last update: about 10 months ago

At the premises of Servizzi Ewropej f'Malta in Valletta, the publication "Islands in a Continent" was launched. The book, produced by SEM together with Europe Direct Valletta, offers an artistic and reflective perspective on Malta's experience within the European Union. Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi praised the initiative for helping to deepen public understanding of the EU.

This is the fourth SEM and Europe Direct publication and contains seven stories by established Maltese authors, edited by Clare Azzopardi with illustrations by Julian Mallia. Unlike previous editions aimed at younger readers, this book targets adults and offers broader reflections on how EU membership has influenced Maltese identity on both personal and collective levels.

The Minister emphasised that the book invites mature reflection on identity and encourages discussion rather than offering fixed answers.

SEM's Chief Executive, Rodrick Zerafa, described the publication as an invitation for the public to reflect on Maltese identity, national development within the EU, and future aspirations.

The book addresses themes such as youth opportunities, ageing within a European society, gender roles, multiculturalism, integration and the impact of EU funds on daily life.

The publication is available in public libraries, care homes and community centres, with free copies obtainable from the SEM office and digitally via the SEM website.
