The 14-year-old student alleged to have stabbed a classmate at St Clare's College in Pembroke is expected to be charged later on Tuesday, the police said. Proceedings are scheduled to take place before Magistrate Abigail Critien on Tuesday at 6pm.

The student was questioned by police shortly after the incident, which occurred Monday morning before school started. He is reported to have used a diving knife to stab his classmate.

The victim sustained five stab wounds to one of his lungs and was transported to Mater Dei Hospital, where he is currently in stable condition. It is understood that the victim had previously reported the suspect for taking a mobile phone to school.

Another Maltese student intervened to halt the assault and was subsequently treated for shock at Mater Dei Hospital. His condition has not yet been disclosed. Both the victim and the aggressor are Libyan nationals who have resided in Malta since the age of three.

The Ministry of Education has engaged the Victim Support Agency to provide assistance to students and educators, while the school's administration is cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation. The Malta Union of Teachers has also indicated that it is monitoring the situation and has contacted the ministry to request necessary support.
