A 32-year-old soldier from Żabbar has been formally charged by summons with the involuntary homicide of motorcyclist Andrea Alamango, aged 28, who died following a collision on the Kappara Flyover in March 2022. The accused, Marvin Buhagiar, is also facing charges of causing involuntary damage to Alamango's motorcycle. He entered a plea of not guilty.

The fatal incident occurred on 15 March 2022 at approximately 11pm, when two Suzuki GSXR600 motorcycles collided on Mikiel Anton Vassalli Road. Both riders, Alamango and Buhagiar, were transported to Mater Dei Hospital. Alamango succumbed to his injuries shortly after admission, while Buhagiar sustained only minor injuries.

Testimony from police officers who were among the first responders was presented in court on Tuesday. Police Sergeant Sandro Mangion relayed a witness account from a motorcyclist who observed the collision in his rear-view mirror. According to the witness, one of the motorcycles moved into the outer lane and struck the other from the side, causing both riders to be thrown off their bikes.

Inspector Dylan Pace, who had been a police constable at the time, stated that he received a call from the Control Room at around 11.30 p.m. Upon arrival, officers secured the area and confirmed that both injured individuals had already been taken to hospital. They observed a substantial pool of blood near the roadside barriers, significant scrape marks on the asphalt, and both damaged motorcycles lying on the ground. Alamango's motorcycle had been dragged roughly 100 metres from the point of impact.

The court issued a prima facie decree, which was not contested by the defence. The case was adjourned to 7 January at noon. The prosecution is being led by Inspector Ian Azzopardi and Attorney General lawyer Darlene Grima, while Buhagiar is represented by lawyers Franco Debono and Francesca Zarb. Magistrate Monica Vella is presiding over the proceedings.
