Official information presented in parliament indicates that the youngest individual to be the subject of a domestic violence report was a 16-day-old baby. At the opposite end of the age spectrum, the oldest person to file such a report with the police was 93 years old. These details were provided by the Minister for Home Affairs, Byron Camilleri, in response to a parliamentary question by Opposition MP Ivan Bartolo.

Earlier this month, data released by the National Statistics Office recorded 3,798 individuals who either reported experiencing domestic violence or made use of available victim support services. Women accounted for 76 percent of these reports.

Most individuals, amounting to 57.5 percent, accessed services only once throughout 2024. A further 21.4 percent used services twice, while 21.1 percent used them three or more times. Among female victims, 44.9 percent sought assistance on more than one occasion, compared with 35 percent of male victims.

In terms of age distribution, 29.3 percent of cases involved persons aged 30 to 39, while 24.7 percent concerned individuals aged 50 and above. The overwhelming majority - 83.4 percent - related to Maltese nationals.

These figures are being discussed as Malta observes the annual 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, a campaign running from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Gender-based Violence, until 10 December, Human Rights Day.
