Marsaskala residents demand that demolition of promenade arches cease immediately

The Marsaskala Residents' Network has expressed its "deepest concern and anger at the ongoing demolition works beneath the promenade in Triq is-Salini," which it said are being carried out without a planning application.

"The permit application PA/6645/25 for a ferry landing in this area of the bay is still being processed by the authorities, and in any case does not include the destruction of these characteristic arches. We view these works as a blatant disregard for due process, the public interest and the character of our town."

This is not just about concrete and arches, the Network said.

"The area known as 'taħt l-Arkati' is a defining feature of Marsaskala's heritage, identity and landscape. Its destruction erases part of the town's memory, its uniqueness, and the bond we share with our coastline. Moving forward with demolition while permits remain unresolved constitutes a form of institutional bullying. Being in government does not grant carte blanche to bulldoze over residents' rights, our history, and our seaside."

The Network demands the immediate full halt to all demolition and works beneath the promenade "until the necessary planning permits are transparently processed and publicly debated."

It also demands the publication of all relevant documents: environmental impact assessments, heritage/archaeological studies, structural assessments, and full project plans. "Residents must have a right to review and meaningfully comment."

It demands "a genuine public consultation with the community and not just cosmetic 'information sessions,' but real engagement where the voices of locals are heard and respected."

It also demands "respect for the identity, heritage and environment of Marsaskala because once lost, these features cannot be restored."

"We call on the responsible authorities to stop treating Marsaskala as a blank slate for development at any cost. Being in power does not give one the right to ride rough-shod over communities. We will not stand idle while our heritage and living environment are destroyed."
