A proposed five-storey home for the elderly in the centre of Żabbar has prompted further reaction, with two Labour politicians adding their voices to the ongoing discussion about the project approved by the Planning Authority.
PN MP Edward Zammit Lewis said the case demonstrates how the Planning Authority "continues to be insensitive to the people's sentiment", arguing that government entities must align their decisions with the public's expectations. He also called for a revision of local plans to offer stronger protection to historic town centres and clearer legal certainty for all involved.
PL MEP Alex Agius Saliba echoed this view, expressing "solidarity with the people of Żabbar" and full support for the local council, led by Mayor Jorge Grech. He said the proposed development is located just steps away from the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces and insists that "Pjazza Medjatriċi deserves more respect."
Their comments follow an earlier statement from Finance Minister Clyde Caruana, who also backed the council's opposition to the project, noting that as a Żabbar resident himself, he understood the community's concerns.
Labour MP Carmelo Abela also expressed reservation on the project, saying that elderly care should not come at the expense of a locality's character.
The Żabbar local council this week announced a public demonstration following the authority's approval of the elderly care home overlooking the locality's Urban Conservation Area. The protest will take place on Monday in the main square.
The site sits within an area containing several culturally significant buildings, including the Notre Dame Hall, the Żabbar Sanctuary Museum, and Dar Sagra Familja, a Church-run children's home. The parish church stands directly adjacent to the museum. The council has argued that the proposed height exceeds that of nearby structures, disrupts the traditional architectural context, and could obstruct fireworks displays associated with local festivities.
