Fifty take-offs and landings are set to make Christmas Day the quietest of 2025 at Malta International Airport, it said in a statement.

"With many holidaymakers typically reaching their destinations before Christmas to celebrate with loved ones, this slow-down is an annual occurrence.2

Holiday travel is expected to ramp up just two days later, Malta International Airport said.

"On what is set to be the month's busiest day, an estimated 206 flights will carry around 30,000 passengers to and from Malta International Airport. This level of aircraft activity, which surpasses the daily average for summer 2025, highlights strong travel demand in December, particularly from locals."

"On average, one in six travellers is local during the year, but in December, this rises to one in four. Beyond school holidays and family reunions, this increase can be attributed to the heightened appeal of wintry destinations during this period. The magic of Christmas markets, the thrill of snowy slopes, and a proper taste of winter are all within easier reach this season thanks to enhanced connections to Scandinavia, Scotland, Northern Italy, and Poland."

"Meanwhile, increased flight frequencies on most Polish routes helped the market return to third place on the November leaderboard, behind the United Kingdom and Italy. Germany's marginal growth over 2024 ranked it fourth, while Spain's double-digit increase pushed it back into the top five after a lengthy absence."

These markets accounted for almost 62% of the 734,791 passenger movements registered in November, it said.
