Ħamrun Spartans concluded their historic European campaign this season with a 3-1 defeat against Irish champions Shamrock Rovers in the final match of the Maltese side in the UEFA Conference League league phase.
Before this match there had been high expectations among Ħamrun supporters, especially since their opponents on the day had collected only one point up to that stage, compared to the three points obtained by Ħamrun Spartans from six matches in this phase of the competition.
However, what shaped and ultimately defined the final result was the incident that led to the dismissal of Joseph Mbong in the 27th minute. At that point the score was still 1-1, with Giacomo Modica's team beginning to show positivity in their play. The sending off of Mbong made all the difference, and it became almost impossible to salvage a result against Shamrock Rovers, who were intelligent enough to fully exploit their numerical superiority on the pitch.
Once again, the hero for the Maltese side was Ħamrun Spartans' goalkeeper Henry Bonello. Quite frankly, it is hard to imagine what the Ħamruniżi would do without him between the posts.
After nearly a quarter of an hour from kick-off, the Irish side took the lead when the referee awarded a penalty against Ħamrun Spartans. The decision was controversial, as a shot by Dylan Watts was judged to have struck the hand of Vincenzo Polito. From the penalty spot, Graham Burke stepped up for Shamrock Rovers and made no mistake against Bonello, giving his team a 1-0 lead.
Ħamrun Spartans held firm and managed to respond. Saliou Thioune came close to scoring the equaliser, but opposing goalkeeper Ed McGinty produced a fine save to deny the 21-year-old Italian. Nevertheless, in the 20th minute the Maltese side did find the equaliser through N'Dri Koffi.
It was a reaction that demonstrated the character of Ħamrun Spartans, but five minutes later any tactical plan that the Sicilian coach Modica had in mind quickly went up in smoke when Joseph Mbong was shown a straight red card by Czech referee Marek Radia after a harsh challenge on Victor Ozhianvuna.
This was the episode that turned everything upside down and further complicated matters for Ħamrun Spartans. With the Irish side playing with a numerical advantage, Ħamrun Spartans struggled to control their opponents, and Shamrock Rovers were good enough to exploit having an extra player on the pitch.
It was at this point that Bonello began to display his qualities, producing a number of saves. However, in stoppage time at the end of the first half, Shamrock Rovers regained the lead when a header by Rory Gaffney was partially saved by Bonello, the ball fell to Graham Burke, who then squared it to Danny Grant to fire into the net for a 2-1 scoreline.
With Shamrock Rovers enjoying a one-goal lead and numerical superiority at the expense of Ħamrun Spartans, the second half was always expected to be an uphill battle for the Maltese champions.
In the second half, the Irish side missed several scoring opportunities, largely due to Bonello's decisive interventions with a series of saves. Ħamrun Spartans attempted to come out of their defensive shell and even created chances of their own, but the Maltese goal never arrived. In stoppage time of the second half, substitute John McGovern scored the third and final goal for the Irish side, sealing Shamrock Rovers' first victory of the league phase, having previously collected only one point before this match.
This was the fifth defeat from six matches for the Maltese side.
