Socialist International openly sang Robert Abela's praise as it marked six years of his leadership, highlighting what it described as a record defined by social justice, economic progress, and democratic values.
In a letter to Prime Minister Abela, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, writing in his role as President of Socialist International, commended Abela's leadership for strengthening social progress, safeguarding workers' rights, and advancing sustainable development. Sánchez said that in difficult and uncertain times, Abela demonstrated responsibility, resilience, and a clear vision for Malta's future.
Socialist International expressed its appreciation for Abela's work and wished him continued success, noting that under his leadership Malta maintained an active and constructive role at both European and global levels, consistently promoting social democratic and progressive principles.
Abela's leadership was described as one that takes decisions in the best interests of families and businesses alike, building a strong economy that reinvests in people.
The organisation pointed to the continued expansion of social benefits, targeted support for the most vulnerable including pensioners and children, and two substantial consecutive tax cuts for workers. It also highlighted improvements in wages and conditions for 33,000 government workers, alongside new measures supporting the private sector through wage increase subsidies of up to 80%.
Further praise was directed at initiatives supporting first-time buyers, including the €10,000 grant and the expansion of the Equity Sharing scheme. Socialist International also noted policies reaching every level of society, from support for people with special needs and the New Hope scheme, to reforms in IVF legislation, which have led to Malta welcoming its thousandth IVF baby since the changes were introduced.
Looking ahead, Abela's leadership was credited with delivering a comprehensive long-term national strategy through Vision Malta 2050, aimed at building new and lasting prosperity for Maltese and Gozitan families.
