On Monday, 12 January 2026, Infrastructure Malta will initate works to "breathe new life" into Saqqajja, Rabat, as part of the national VjalKulhadd initiative.

Through a renewed design, we are giving back to the community a more welcoming and safer place for families and the thousands of tourists who frequent this picturesque area, the agency said on its Facebook page.

"We are installing a new smart outdoor lighting system, carefully designed to reduce light pollution in the area. Alongside new indigenous trees and shrubs, we will introduce a new water irrigation system to ensure these trees remain healthy throughout the year. The parking system will also be upgraded to a more organised and secure layout, including new electric vehicle charging points, as well as bicycle and scooter racks," the agency said.

During the first phase of the Project, part of Saqqajja Road, in the direction from Triq Nikola Saura towards Mdina will be closed until further notice.

Drivers are urged to plan ahead and use Triq l-Gheriexem, Rabat, when travelling towards Mdina. Other routes will not be affected.
