Two puppies were rescued on Sunday after being found running loose on a main road during a routine police roadcheck targeting excessive speeding in Ħaż-Żebbuġ, the Malta Police Force said.

The incident occurred in Triq l-Imdina while police officers were carrying out continuous traffic inspections, including during night-time hours, as part of ongoing enforcement efforts against speeding and other road-related offences. Several vehicles were found to be travelling at excessive speeds, and a number of contraventions were issued for various traffic violations.

During the inspections, officers noticed the two puppies running in the middle of the road, placing them in immediate danger from oncoming traffic. With the assistance of a motorist who happened to be passing at the time, police officers managed to safely retrieve the animals from the roadway.

Members of the Animal Welfare Directorate were called to the scene, where an inspection confirmed that the puppies were not microchipped. The animals were subsequently taken into the care of the Animal Welfare Directorate.
