MITI MITI, the acclaimed interactive theatre experience for children and families, returns to Teatru Salesjan in Sliema from 6 to 8 February, offering young audiences aged 5 to 14 - and the adults who accompany them - a vibrant, imaginative journey where children help decide how the story unfolds.
Produced by Teatru Malta, MITI MITI has already captured the imagination of audiences in Malta and abroad. Designed specifically for children but crafted with depth and humour that resonates across generations, the production creates a rare shared theatre experience in which children lead the adventure and adults reconnect with the joy of storytelling.
Unlike traditional theatre, MITI MITI is built around participation and choice. Each performance is different, shaped by the decisions made by the children in the audience. Guided by the playful character Jax, alongside the mysterious Fates and the Oracle, audiences travel through reimagined Greek myths that explore themes familiar to every growing child - ambition, confidence and humility.
Stories such as Icarus, the boy who flew too close to the sun; Arion, the dolphin boy who finds his voice; and Arachne, the gifted weaver undone by arrogance, are brought to life through music, movement, puppetry and humour. The production encourages children to reflect on how choices shape outcomes, while celebrating imagination as a powerful tool.
MITI MITI appeals across age groups: younger children are drawn in by its visual magic and playful energy, older children engage with ideas of identity, courage and self-belief, and adults often remark on the production's emotional intelligence and wit. Parents frequently describe it as "the rare show we all enjoyed together."
Performed by the Teatru Malta Ensemble - the national theatre's first permanent ensemble - the bilingual production, presented in both Maltese and English, reflects the way children naturally communicate. Rich in live music, theatrical illusion and audience interaction, MITI MITI premiered at the ŻiguŻajg International Arts Festival and has since toured internationally.
