Opposition Leader would exclude 30,000 families from tax cuts, PL says

Opposition Leader Alex Borg confirmed that he would leave working parents with one child out in the cold and exclude them from the tax reduction, the Labour Party said Sunday. He would leave out around 30,000 working families because, in his view, they should not be assisted.

If the country were to follow the Leader of the Opposition, this would be the outcome, because his proposal is, in fact, inferior to what the Labour Government introduced in Budget 2026, where parents with one child, as well as those with two or more children, are benefiting from a second consecutive tax cut, in addition to another tax cut for all workers.

ith the Labour Government's tax cut, a middle-class family earning up to €60,000 per year between two parents and with two children will not pay a single cent in tax for almost a quarter of a century, while parents with one child will also see substantial savings on their tax payments, the PL said.

This shows a clear difference between the Government and the Opposition, where the latter either makes promises and fails to deliver or even proposes measures that are inferior. On the other hand, the Labour Government delivers more than it promises: as in the case of the increase in the Children's Allowance, and Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that although it had been said that youths who had already benefited from the free gym scheme would not benefit again, the government has now decided to offer it once more to these youths so they can enjoy the scheme for another year. If anything, the Leader of the Opposition has continued to confirm that he is not ready to lead this country for the benefit of families, the PL said.
