Prime Minister Robert Abela says Malta still evaluating participation in Trump’s Board of Peace

Prime Minister Robert Abela has said Malta is still evaluating an informal invitation to join Donald Trump's proposed "Board of Peace," amid the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Abela emphasised that the country is carefully weighing its options. "Over 47,000 people have died, and more than 40,000 are still missing. This is a tragedy affecting thousands of innocent lives," he said.

The Prime Minister highlighted Malta's recognition of the State of Palestine at the United Nations in recent months and reaffirmed the government's ongoing support for the Palestinian cause. He noted that discussions with the Palestinian ambassador suggested some improvement in the situation following the 20-point peace plan launched by the US presidency.

Abela also criticised the European response, describing it as limited. "At the European level, intervention in the Middle East has been minimal. Declarations were made, but they had little practical effect," he said.

He stressed that any participation in the Board of Peace must be carefully structured. Malta believes the initiative should be temporary, focused solely on Gaza, and should not replace or undermine the United Nations. All EU member states, as well as the Palestinian Authority, should be involved in discussions, he added.

"Our priority is to minimise civilian casualties and halt the ongoing massacre. We must ask whether joining the board will help achieve this, or whether it could complicate efforts," Abela said.

The Prime Minister concluded that Malta will continue consultations with EU partners before making a final decision, carefully considering the potential benefits and risks of participating in the board.
