Is it a concert? That is the question many have been asking. The answer is yes - but not in the conventional sense. Teatranja reimagines the traditional concert format, offering audiences an immersive encounter where music, theatre, and spoken word converge.
In a departure from the expected, Schola Cantorum Jubilate's choir director, Marouska Attard, steps away from the conductor's podium to take centre stage as a soloist. This rare shift allows audiences to experience her artistry from an entirely new perspective.
The performance transforms the theatre itself into part of the artistic narrative. Audience members will be invited onto the stage, turning what is typically a grand performance space into an intimate setting. From this elevated and unconventional vantage point, spectators will encounter the theatre from above, discovering the space anew as it becomes an active participant in the performance.
Attard will be joined by pianist Irina Fedcenko in a programme spanning early to late Romantic lieder and mélodie repertoire. Works by Brahms, Rossini, Dvořák, Strauss, Poulenc, and Barber will be performed alongside compositions by Gozitan composer Prof. Joseph Vella, creating a dialogue between international masterworks and local musical heritage.
Adding another expressive layer to the evening, selected writings by contemporary Gozitan authors will be interpreted by actor Paul Portelli. Through his distinctive delivery and imaginative presence, Portelli will weave spoken word seamlessly into the musical fabric of the programme.
