As the 2025-26 YoHealth Malta Premier season enters into an interesting phase, Ħamrun Spartans find themselves at the heart of a compelling title battle - defending their crown against a tight cluster of challengers in Malta's top flight.
The Spartans entered this campaign as reigning champions, having secured their eleventh Maltese Premier League title and their third consecutive crown in the 2024-25 season. The title was decided after Floriana failed to win their last match against Birkirkara and therefore a final four mechanism had to be adopted for the first time. Their pedigree and recent consistency mark them as the team to beat, but this season's league landscape is proving more competitive than ever.
On the pitch, Ħamrun Spartans have shown strong overall form. Statistical overviews from recent matches demonstrate a side capable of both attacking threat and defensive resilience. They have notched healthy goal figures while maintaining one of the best goal differences in the league. League performance data shows an impressive record of 13 wins, 6 draws, and just 2 losses, translating into a formidable 2.20 points per game average and positioning them near the summit of the table.
Beyond domestic competition, Ħamrun Spartans have also been a historic presence in European football this season. In August 2025, they made history by qualifying for the UEFA Conference League group stages, a first for a Maltese club. While this achievement highlighted their strength and growth, the added fixture load and travel impacted domestic consistency. But they just the same managed to juggle between domesitic and European football and win the first phase of the Premier League. Winning the second phase will mean game over and fourth consecutive title.
Ħamrun Spartans possess the pedigree, depth and experience to keep on winning. They are the best outfit but have got strong competition and thus their title defence won't be straightforward - and rivals are poised to pounce on any slip-ups as the season heads into its decisive stages.
In fact Floriana are already in pole position when we are practically half way through the first phase of the Closing Round. The million dollar question is if they are going to be capable on holding to top spot and thus denying the Spartans from winning it in a straight forward manner.
'We were finally rewarded for our efforts '
- Paul Zammit, coach Birkirkara FC
'We are still in the first days but I have to publicly thank those who work so closely to me and also the players committment'. These were the first comments that Birkirkara coach Paul Zammit passed after his team's win against rivals Valletta. Zammit continued. 'It was a difficult match but we believed. Even after that episode when we missed the penalty, the players responded with committment and perseverance and finally we were rewarded and got the maximum points from a very difficult encounter.'
'The playing surface made a huge difference'
- Daniel Portela, coach Floriana FC
'We did our match cause we could play better and one of the reasons is the grass which at the Centenary Stadium is much better'. Daniel's Portela comment after his team Floriana beat Gzira United by a last gasp goal to take sole leadership of the standings. Portela insisted. 'Our players were good in all aspects but I must give credit to our opponents Gzira who have a very good team and didn't give us much space to play our game. Now we have to look forward and prepare for the next game.'

v Chaos ensued early afternoon on Sunday when play had to be stopped in the match between Gzira United and Floriana which ended in a win for the Greens by a 2-1 scoreline, the winning goal coming deep into stoppage time. It transpires that there was a disagreement between the match officials which led to some objects being thrown and play halted.
