The Labour Party's promises to car and motorcycle enthusiasts have remained on paper, with results falling far short of what was pledged, the Nationalist Party said in a statement.
"Although the Quarter Mile Track was meant to be completed by November 2025, more than three months after its intended completion date, not even half of the works have been carried out. Throughout this period, we have heard plenty of words and countless promises. But the results speak for themselves: nothing meaningful has been done."
The PN said it reiterates its commitment to the development of motorsport in Malta and to all those who, with dedication and on a voluntary basis, have built this sector over the years.
"We believe in serious planning, transparency, and respect towards associations and athletes. We cannot accept that Maltese motorsport is being deprived of its opportunities due to a lack of vision and poor leadership by the Labour Government. This has now also been publicly confirmed by Clint D'Amato, Secretary General of Ħal Far's Malta Drag Racing Association, who in a Facebook post shared a message he had written exactly one year ago, stating that to date - one year later - only around 40% of the works on this project have been completed."
"Commenting on the lies and empty promises made to them, D'Amato stated: 'Lots of promises, zero substance!'," the PN said.
"The Secretary General of the Malta Drag Racing Association went on to say that those who should have ensured that Drag Racing enthusiasts do not end up in this situation instead 'threw them into the fire', while others who made numerous promises have now disappeared. D'Amato insisted that Maltese motorsport has been betrayed," the party said.
The PN said it believes that the sporting community and Maltese sport deserve better.
"They deserve projects carried out with seriousness - not promises that take years to be, perhaps one day, delivered. In 13 years in government, the Labour administration has failed to complete even a quarter-mile track - let alone give enthusiasts any reason to believe it will honour its promise to deliver a €78 million full-scale car racing track. This is a project that has been promised election after election, yet to this day remains shelved and undelivered."
PL responds
In response, the PL said that a Labour Government is the only guarantee for the completion of the Ħal Far racetrack project.
"Labour is the only government with a clear vision for the motorsport sector, through a state-of-the-art project at Ħal Far that will cater for drag racing, karting, and circuit. Regrettably, the Nationalist Opposition is attempting to politicise a project intended for the benefit of all motorsport enthusiasts. This comes just weeks after it attempted to jeopardise the discipline through legal amendments it sought to introduce, drafted irresponsibly."
The PL said that the Nationalist Party had every opportunity to complete such a project over 25 years in government yet neglected this sector. "This stands in stark contrast to the work currently underway to provide top-tier facilities for the motorsport community. The project includes the construction of two new towers equipped with modern facilities, new impact barriers that meet criteria established by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), and the complete resurfacing of the quarter-mile track using advanced post-tensioned concrete technology. In total, approximately 1,500 cubic metres of concrete will be used for the quarter-mile surface. All this represents a significant step forward, ensuring that motorsport enthusiasts experience a substantial improvement in the quality and standards of this sport."
"The government remains open to dialogue with all those acting in good faith for the benefit and successful completion of the project. It has the credibility to deliver on its promises-and this will once again be the case with the Ħal Far racetrack project."
