During the fourth quarter of 2025, both road traffic accidents and casualties decreased when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Road traffic fatalities amounted to two, the NSO said Wednesday.

The number of reported traffic accidents during the fourth quarter of 2025 reached 3,694, down by 6.7 per cent over the same period in 2024. The Northern Harbour district registered the most accidents with 1,200 cases or 32.5 per cent of all accidents.

Road traffic casualties decreased by 10.8 per cent to 332 over the same period in 2024. Grievously injured persons amounted to 103, and consisted of 60 drivers, 12 passengers and 31 pedestrians/cyclists/others.

The injuries suffered by two drivers proved fatal. During this quarter, one less fatality was recorded when compared to the corresponding period in 2024.

The majority of those grievously injured were males (65.1 per cent). Moreover, the fatalities that occurred during this quarter involved one male and one female. With regard to age cohorts, 28.6 per cent of the casualties involved persons in the 41 to 59 age bracket.

The largest number of road traffic casualties (48.5 per cent) involved passenger cars, followed by motorcycles (40.1 per cent) and goods-carrying vehicles (6.3 per cent). The fatalities included two drivers colliding with another vehicle. Cyclists involved in traffic accidents amounted to nine, where three suffered grievous injuries, five suffered slight injuries and one suffered insignificant injuries. Road traffic casualties resulting from accidents between vehicles topped the list with 59.6 per cent of all road traffic casualties.

The highest number of road traffic casualties occurred on Mondays with 59 casualties, and the highest number of road traffic accidents occurred on Fridays with 609 cases or 16.5 per cent of the total. The time bracket with the highest number of road traffic accidents occurred between 12:00 - 14:59 with 844 cases or 22.9 per cent of the total, followed by the 09:00 - 11:59 time bracket with 843 cases. The least number of accidents occurring daily took place between 00:00 - 02:59 with 56 cases.

The highest incidence of road traffic accidents was registered in Ħal Qormi with 202 cases, followed by Birkirkara and Il-Marsa, with 201 and 183 cases respectively.

Il-Kalkara, Il-Fontana, San Lawrenz and L-Għasri registered less than five road traffic accidents..

All districts recorded a decrease in road traffic accidents, except the South Eastern and Gozo and Comino districts, when compared to the fourth quarter of the previous year. The Northern district registered the highest percentage decrease in road traffic accidents at 17.1 per cent, whereas the Gozo and Comino district recorded the highest percentage increase at 20.1 per cent.

According to the NSO, the number of fatalities during 2025 reached 18, up by six when compared to the previous year. In an end-of-year report, The Malta Independent had listed a total of 21 traffic-related accidents.

In 2025, the reported injury accidents amounted to 1,153, the NSO said, a decrease of 131 accidents, or 10.2 per cent when compared to 2024. Moreover, non-injury accidents amounted to 13,951, a decrease of 1,368 accidents or 8.9 per cent over the cases reported during previous year. The second quarter of 2025 recorded the highest number of accidents (4,026) while the third quarter of 2025 recorded the highest number of fatalities (7).
