Former PL MP Deborah Schembri has announced that she will once again contest the upcoming general election on behalf of the Labour Party after being invited to run by Prime Minister Robert Abela.

In a public statement on social media, Schembri said she accepted the invitation "wholeheartedly", describing service to the country as the greatest honour, and confirmed she will submit her formal nomination in the coming days. She said that, if elected, she would represent constituents with 'commitment, responsibility and diligence," while thanking supporters for their continued encouragement.

Schembri, a lawyer by profession, served as a member of the Parliament of Malta between 2013 and 2017 after being elected on the Labour Party ticket in the 2013 general election.  During her time in office she also formed part of Malta's delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and was appointed parliamentary secretary for planning and simplification in 2016 following the resignation of Michael Falzon.

After not getting re-elected in 2017, Schembri returned to legal work and has since also took on advisory roles within public bodies. In 2021, she had been made director general of the Malta Developers Association (MDA).
