The exhibition "Malta's Carnival - Behind the Mask" was launched at the European Parliament in Brussels, the government said in a statement.

It was inaugurated by Culture Minister Owen Bonnici and Labour deputy leader and MEP Alex Agius Saliba.

The exhibition showcases original Carnival float elements, elaborate costumes, and an immersive virtual reality experience. It presents the historical evolution of Maltese Carnival, with roots dating back to the 16th century. The exhibition runs throughout this week at the European Parliament, under the artistic direction of Daniel Cauchi with support from Arts Council Malta.

"Carnival is a live expression of the collective creativity of our population," Bonnici said. "It is a heritage which was formed throughout entire centuries and we should carry on investing in it so that we continue to strengthen our cultural identity, both in our country as well as outside of it."

Bonnici also stressed that hosting the exhibition at the European Parliament gives important recognition to artists, designers, float builders and volunteers who bring Carnival to life each year.

Agius Saliba shared similar sentiments. "This is a unique occasion where the European Parliament can appreciate Maltese talent. Maltese Carnival remains a live tradition that unites the generations and continues to express identity and imagination that makes us proud to be Maltese."
