The Malta Ranger unit is urging environmental police officers to have a presence in Gozo, saying that they have none.

In a statement on social media, the Malta Rangers Unit said that the island is without Environmental Police and with full impunity.

"Today our Rangers reported a case of welfare concern for several animals in Qala. When the Police were on site with Animal Welfare, a person was seen by the Rangers to run off from the site in question, covering his face with a green balaclava. He had seemingly been monitoring the Police and us from a distance. Moments later when the Police searched for the man above the site, two other individuals came out from their illegal trapping sites. As the norm is in Gozo, covering their faces with balaclavas whilst running off. Unfortunately the decision was taken not to pursue the chase and the individuals got away. This time."

The MRU said that its Rangers will continue to monitor Gozo, "which at the moment is seeing a surge in environmental crimes and mainly for illegal trapping of birds out of open season."

"Environmental crime is a lucrative business where the individual benefits at the expense of nature and biodiversity. These individuals are equipped with gear and a well-thought escape route, showing that the crimes are fully planned."

"It's now 2026 and Gozo is still without Environmental Protection Unit Police. How long will we have to wait until this impunity ends?," the MRU asked.

"Our Rangers are fighting an uphill battle. We need to better equip them and increase the amount of Rangers boots on the ground!"
