Prime Minister Robert Abela addressed Parliament following his participation in the recent European Council summit held on 19 March, where European Union leaders convened to discuss escalating geopolitical challenges and their economic implications.

Abela said the summit opened with a briefing on the ongoing war in Ukraine, with President Volodymyr Zelensky outlining the latest developments in Russia's military offensive. Leaders also raised concerns over the growing risk of mass migration triggered by the conflict.

Abela noted that discussions extended to broader global tensions, including instability in the Middle East and the lack of de-escalation in Iran. He confirmed that EU leaders met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, emphasising the UN's central role in maintaining peace through diplomacy.

A key focus of the summit was the sharp rise in energy prices, which Abela described as a most pressing issue. He warned that Malta is particularly vulnerable to such increases and stressed that the EU must take proactive measures rather than remain "spectators" to global economic shifts.

Opposition Leader Alex Borg also addressed Parliament, underscoring the gravity of the current geopolitical climate. He described the situation as one of "uncertainty and challenges," warning that ongoing conflicts risk evolving into broader economic crises affecting countries like Malta.

Borg called for national unity beyond partisan lines to ensure stability for Maltese and Gozitan citizens. He condemned Iran's actions in the region and expressed solidarity with Cyprus following reported attacks.

On the humanitarian front, Borg voiced concern over worsening conditions in Gaza Strip, reiterating support for a two-state solution that allows Israel and Palestine to coexist peacefully.

Turning to Ukraine, Borg noted that the war is entering its fifth year, reaffirming support for the country's sovereignty and backing its future membership in the European Union.
