Two people were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the alleged trafficking and possession of drugs following what police described as intensive investigations and ongoing surveillance targeting abuse and illegal activity.

The arrests were made at around 1.45pm when police stopped a Citroen in Naxxar Road, San Ġwann, the police said.

Inside the vehicle were the two suspects: a 38-year-old Maltese man from Msida, who was driving the car, and a 39-year-old Maltese woman from San Ġwann.

A search of the car led to the discovery of 31 sachets containing a substance suspected to be heroin. Police said that, if sold, the drugs would have had a street value exceeding €2,500. Around €6,000 in cash was also found.

Searches were then carried out at the suspects' residence, where police seized a number of luxury items as well as several vehicles belonging to the two individuals, including a Mercedes A-Class and an Audi Q5.

The man and woman are currently being held in the police lock-up for further investigations.

They are expected to be arraigned in court in the coming days and charged with alleged drug trafficking and possession, as well as money laundering.
