60% of the Marsalforn road project is complete, the Gozo Ministry said in a statement.

The project is described as one of the largest road infrastructure projects in Gozo, with a road length of around 3.5km. It connects Rabat to Marsalforn, a key arterial route.

Triq Ġorġ Pisani and Triq Patri Ġaċintu Camenzuli bypass have already been opened. Parts of the main road have also already been tarmacked and opened to traffic. Works are currently ongoing across three zones simultaneously, with the target to be “almost complete by next summer”, according to Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri.

The bypass is already reducing traffic through Rabat, the Ministry said. The project aims to improve traffic flow towards Marsalforn.

The project also includes a number of environmental measures. Around 300 mature indigenous trees are to be planted, and over 200 existing trees are to be saved and relocated. This is to be done in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa. The emphasis is on balancing development with environmental protection, the Ministry said.

"It will be ensured that the Marsalforn road will be more beautiful than before, with many more trees than it had,” said Din l-Art Ħelwa.

The project’s infrastructure upgrades include new systems for water and drainage, “new water” for agriculture, rainwater management, and street lighting. It also includes stormwater infrastructure and reservoir conversion.

There will also be some additional improvements, such as a new bridge over Wied il-Karawendi. Moreover, there will be a junction upgrade near Kapuccini Church including a public square, green areas, and safer pedestrian spaces.
