A 26-year-old has been handed a four-year effective prison sentence after admitting to robbing an elderly man in Ħamrun earlier this year

Farhan Adan Mohammed, who does not have a fixed address in Malta, pleaded guilty to all charges brought against him, including committing aggravated theft on a vulnerable person, living a life of idleness and vagrancy, and moreover, on the same dates, places, times in a public place, harassing members of the public by begging.

The offences took place on 27 February between 2pm and 3pm in Ħamrun, whereby the court heard how the 74-year-old victim was seated at a bus stop in Blata l-Bajda when he was approached by the accused. After attempting to talk to him, the accused pushed the elderly man, dragged him to the ground, and stole his wallet, which contained €1,000 in cash and his driving licence.

The aggressor then fled the scene and the victim immediately reported the incident to the police.

Investigations, including CCTV footage from various locations, led to the identification of Mohammed as the perpetrator. In addition to theft aggravated by violence and value, the accused was also charged with causing physical or psychological harm to a vulnerable elderly person.

The court noted that the accused had admitted to all charges at an early stage and had shown remorse for his actions, noting the fact that this was his first brush with the law. However, given the seriousness of the crime, particularly the targeting of an elderly victim, a custodial sentence was deemed necessary.

The court sentenced Mohammed to four years' effective imprisonment and issued a reprimand. He was also ordered to pay €1,000 in compensation to the victim, representing the stolen amount. A restraining order was issued in favour of the victim to ensure his protection.

Additionally, Mohammed was ordered to pay €1,622 in court expenses.

The case was presided over by Magistrate Leonard Caruana.
