Prime Minister Robert Abela has visited the Prison Bakery at the Corradino Correctional Facility, highlighting its role in rehabilitation and skills development for detainees.

Accompanied by Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment Byron Camilleri, the Prime Minister toured the facility under the guidance of Correctional Services Agency Chief Executive Christopher Siegersma.

During the visit, Dr Abela praised both detainees and officers for their work within the bakery, noting the importance of initiatives that support rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

The Prison Bakery, which dates back to around 1850, is one of the oldest and largest bakeries in Malta. It continues to operate actively, producing fresh bread daily for detainees, while also preparing products that are made available to the public at various times throughout the year.

Central to the initiative is its rehabilitative function. The bakery provides detainees with practical training and skills development, equipping them with experience that may support their return to the workforce upon release.

The "Prison Oven" initiative also aims to address and reduce the stigma associated with the correctional facility, by showcasing constructive work and positive outcomes achieved within the institution.
