Government funding has been allocated to two similar church restoration projects in Żabbar and Żejtun, with works focusing on the repair of prominent domes and, in one case, additional community facilities, in a move aimed at preserving Malta's religious and cultural heritage, the government said.
The Żabbar parish will benefit from substantial investment to restore the dome of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces, as well as the Notre Dame theatre, better known as is-Sala tal-Kappillan, a venue widely used by the local community. The announcement was made by Minister for the Interior, Security and Employment Byron Camilleri and Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government Owen Bonnici, together with the parish archpriest.
The sanctuary is one of the most significant religious sites in Malta, attracting thousands of visitors and pilgrims each year. Over time, structural damage, particularly to the dome and roof areas, has raised concerns not only about the building's integrity but also about the artistic heritage housed within. The planned restoration is intended to address these issues while ensuring that the site remains safe and accessible.
Camilleri said the project goes beyond infrastructural intervention, describing the sanctuary as a central element of the identity and faith of the Żabbar community. He noted that the works will help preserve a dignified environment for worshippers and visitors, while continuing to serve as a focal point for community life.
Bonnici said the investment forms part of a broader government strategy to safeguard national heritage, adding that such initiatives strengthen cultural identity and ensure that historic sites can be appreciated by future generations.
A similar project has been announced for the St Catherine's parish in Żejtun, where government funding will support the restoration of the church's dome. The works will be carried out through entities including Komunità Malta and the Arts Council Malta, with an emphasis on adhering to all cultural heritage regulations.
Bonnici described the Żejtun parish church as unique in both scale and historical significance, and said the restoration forms part of ongoing investment in churches and chapels across Malta. Camilleri added that the project will both preserve the site's religious and historical value and deliver direct benefits to the local community by maintaining accessibility and safety.
In both cases, the respective archpriests welcomed the government's support, expressing appreciation for continued investment in the protection and upkeep of important parish landmarks that play a central role in community and religious life.
