The Malta Chamber of Geologists said Monday it has introduced a new verification system designed to allow developers and citizens to confirm the qualifications of individuals conducting ground investigations. This move addresses what the chamber describes as critical gaps in current construction legislation that undermine public safety and industry integrity.

Under the new rules, all members within the Professional Geologist class must include a unique membership number on every official report and document they produce.

This mandate covers a wide range of essential assessments, including geological, geotechnical, hydrogeological, and mineral reports, the chamber said.

The chamber highlighted a concerning trend where the Building and Construction Authority has permitted individuals without geological expertise to manage complex assessments. They warned that this practice increases the risk of structural failures, posing a threat to both property and public safety.

Ground investigations are a legal requirement prior to construction, serving to confirm foundation stability and prevent the collapse of adjacent buildings. By restricting these assessments to qualified experts, the chamber aims to mitigate structural risks and maintain professional standards within the Maltese construction industry.
