Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg held high-level talks with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and key German counterparts in Berlin, a government statement said.
Borg met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany Johann Wadephul during an official visit to Berlin this week.
Borg spoke of the importance of close and constructive relations between Malta and Germany.
Both sides agreed on strengthening bilateral cooperation and joint engagement within the European Union on shared priorities, the statement said.
In the meetings, Borg spoke of the importance of focusing on competitiveness and ensuring level playing field, particularly in the case of global sectors such as maritime services and security; tourism and connectivity; as well as energy security.
On the international level, the war with Iran and the stability in the wider region, as well as Russia's war in Ukraine featured prominently, with Malta reiterating its firm support for Ukraine while recalling its constitutional neutrality.
"Europe is facing a defining moment. Russia's war in Ukraine continues to have far-reaching implications for Europe, while instability in the Middle East is placing additional strain on energy security and economic stability," Borg said.
He said that it is essential that the European project is reinforced, strengthen unity among Member States, and ensure that the Union continues to deliver for its citizens.
Borg spoke of Malta's active engagement at a multilateral level, including through the United Nations Security Council, the hosting of the Ukraine Peace Formula meeting, the OSCE, and in the Council of Europe.
Broader geopolitical challenges were also raised, including the situation in the rest of the Middle East, Libya, and migration - with Malta continuing to advocate for dialogue, humanitarian access, and stronger EU engagement.
During the visit, Borg also held meetings with members of the German Bundestag, senior political figures, and key representatives of German industry.
"Malta remains committed to strengthening its relationship with Germany and contributing actively to a more united Europe," Borg said.
