A new bone density scanner has been inaugurated at Gozo General Hospital, in a move aimed at improving diagnostic services and preventive healthcare for patients on the island.

Health and Active Ageing Minister Jo Etienne Abela said the new equipment will allow for bone density scans that measure mineral content in bones, helping to detect reduced bone mass and assess treatment for osteoporosis-a condition that increases the risk of fractures.

The investment responds to growing demand for such scans, with around 1,500 procedures expected to be carried out annually. It is intended to enhance efficiency in healthcare delivery while enabling patients to access more services within Gozo.

Minister Abela said the new service complements existing healthcare provision at the hospital, allowing Gozitan patients to receive more comprehensive care closer to home. He stressed that the investment supports preventive healthcare by reducing the risk of serious injuries and long-term disability.

He added that the initiative forms part of ongoing investment in Gozo General Hospital, aimed at continuing to raise the standard of preventive care available to residents.
