A new project aimed at improving and preserving the Għar Ħasan site in Ħal Far has been officially launched by Culture, Lands and Local Government Minister Owen Bonnici.

Covering approximately 5,000 square metres, the Għar Ħasan area forms part of Malta's coastal garigue landscape and holds archaeological, historical and intangible cultural significance, with several legends associated with the cave passed down through generations, a government statement said.

Minister Bonnici said the project seeks to better safeguard the site while ensuring safe public access. He described the initiative as a balance between protecting Malta's tangible and intangible heritage and improving the management of public land.

Planned works include the removal of accumulated waste, rehabilitation of degraded areas, general environmental upgrading, and the restoration of a historic structure dating back to the British period. A buffer zone will also be created between the road and the conservation area.

The project is intended to regenerate the site into a safer and more accessible space for the public, allowing the community to enjoy it in a sustainable manner while respecting its historical and cultural value. Carefully designed facilities, including benches and tables, will be introduced without compromising the site's integrity, the statement said.

All works, including site documentation, permitting and procurement, are being coordinated by the Restoration and Preservation Department. Lands Authority CEO Robert Vella said the initiative reflects ongoing efforts to ensure sustainable and responsible management of public land while improving accessibility and quality of public spaces.
