A party born just two years ago beats a party that seemed hard-wired to power after 16 years in power.

And beats it in such a convincing way, ie not with a slim majority. A historic tsunami that swept everything before it. 

For 16 years Viktor Orban beat the Opposition with ease. 

Helped by his friendship with Donald Trump on the one hand and Russia's Putin on the other, ostracised by the European Union, he looked invincible.

But he did not look under his feet, at what was happening to his own people.

Until a trusted friend broke ranks and turned against him.

It wasn't easy for Peter Magyar, not at all. He had to lose his own family to start with, his three children, his wife of so many years, Judit Varga. She was the Minister for Justice in Orban's government, a far higher position than her husband.

Until one day they had an argument and he left her. The argument might have been personal but it turned political in no time.

They tried to break him. A photo surfaced on the Net, a grainy photo showing an unmade hotel bed and nothing else but promising further revelations.

It was this that further determined Magyar. He admitted he had met a former girlfriend and they had consensual sex during a party conference. "I am human," he said.

Neither he nor the group around him let this threat of blackmail stop them.

On the contrary Magyar redoubled his efforts. He walked all over the country, visited all settlements and the smallest villages where nobody went. He even crossed the borders to the villages and settlements that used to be Hungarian before the borders were changed.

While Orban spoke geo-politics, Magyar spoke about the cost of living, inflation which was breaking the back of so many families.

Then he went on the offensive - there were many secret agreements the Orban government had signed internationally especially about such things as oil provision and after the government is changed these will be made public so the country learns the whole situation.

Magyar did not go running after Orban and try to ingratiate himself with the construction moguls.

He did not try to be nice to Orban, effusively kissing in public. 

He did not need a party radio and television station backing his every move. We think we are in a bad situation when the government takes over most of the adverts on the billboards, and we are. But Orban went further, or let's say Robert Abela didn't dare go further.

Orban turned the Hungarian democracy into a one-party state. But Magyar, undaunted, went on the offensive. And after 16 years the people wanted that, needed that.

Of course, there are many issues that time will tell us what will happen. Orban tried to scare people with what can happen in Ukraine. Will Magyar be forced by the EU to open the frontiers, or go soft on gays?

It will be a more normal country and less under the thumbs of Putin or Trump, that's for sure.

One Magyar commitment stands out: to close down the national broadcaster within a few days after taking office. Magyar had built that extraordinary support through YouTube only.

And I still say: the Royal Opera House must be rebuilt exactly the way it was.
