The Central Bank of Malta has issued a €2 commemorative coin and a silver coin, both having Valletta as their theme.

The coins were launched on 17 April 2026, during a ceremony held at the Fortress Builders in Valletta. The event was attended by the Mayor of the Valletta Local Council, Olaf McKay and the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Malta responsible for Financial Stability, Oliver Bonello and the Bank's Chief Officer responsible for banking operations, Benoit Waelkens.

The €2 commemorative coin is the third in a series dedicated to Maltese walled cities. These coins are of Brilliant Uncirculated quality and are presented in coin cards, rolls, and as part of the Central Bank of Malta's 2026-year set, which also comprises the eight Malta euro coin denominations. In addition, a limited number of €2 commemorative coins were produced in proof quality.

The silver coin has a face value of €10, is struck in 0.999 silver, has a weight of 31.10 grams, a diameter of 38.61 mm and is produced in proof quality. On the reverse the coin shows a view of Valletta. The obverse carries the coat of arms of the Republic of Malta and the year of issue. This coin is limited to four hundred pieces.

The silver coin and the national side of the €2 commemorative coins were designed and engraved by Noel Galea Bason. Both coins were struck at the Royal Dutch Mint.

Valletta was built by the Order of St John in the aftermath of the Great Siege of 1565. Named after Grand Master Jean de Valette, who laid its foundation stone on 28 March 1566, Valletta has been Malta's administrative hub and capital for more than four centuries. Within a compact area, Valletta encompasses an extraordinary concentration of military, religious, political, and civic architecture, alongside a wealth of artistic and cultural heritage. In 1980, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
