Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Robert Abela has officially launched his party's campaign for the 2026 general election, setting out a vision centred on quality of life, stability and continued economic growth.
Unveiling the campaign theme "INT MALTA - Your Dream. Our Project" at Fort Tigne, Abela said voters will face an important choice on May 30, as the country navigates an increasingly uncertain international landscape affecting key sectors such as energy and the economy.
He stressed that the government is prepared to continue providing stability and peace of mind, arguing that experience in leadership during challenging times remains a crucial asset for Malta.
Abela announced that in the coming weeks the Labour Party will present a comprehensive five-year plan built on what he described as realistic and forward-looking proposals addressing the needs and aspirations of citizens. Central to this plan is a stronger emphasis on wellbeing and quality of life, with targeted measures aimed at making a tangible difference in people's daily lives.
Among the proposals outlined are initiatives to help families spend more time together, increased support for first-time buyers seeking home ownership, incentives for young people to start businesses, and enhanced services to safeguard the dignity of the elderly. Continued backing for small and medium-sized enterprises also features prominently.
In what he described as a first for Malta, Abela said the party's electoral manifesto will not only be fully costed but will also include a "wellbeing index" designed to measure the real-life impact of policies. The index will be tied to 25 specific targets intended to track progress over the legislature.
The Prime Minister pointed to achievements in recent years, including tax reductions, higher allowances and stipends, assistance for first-time buyers and sustained economic expansion. He said these results provide a solid foundation for the next phase of the country's development.
Abela also pledged that the electoral campaign would remain positive and respectful, calling for national unity and open dialogue, including with undecided voters and supporters of other parties.
He concluded by saying the proposed plan aims to build on past successes while delivering a higher standard of living and reinforcing a long-term vision for a stronger Malta.
