The Medical Association of Malta has presented a set of key healthcare priorities for the next legislature following a meeting with PN Leader Alex Borg, based on the realities faced by doctors and patients across Malta's health system.

In a statement, MAM said it met with Borg and his team at its offices within Mater Dei Hospital after accepting an invitation for discussions, during which it presented a document detailing the challenges within the sector.

MAM said that the document is not a political statement, but a professional obligation.

At the core of the document is the principle that the health of a nation reflects the value it places on its people, and that a strong healthcare system depends on a well-supported and fairly treated workforce.

The MAM spoke of several priority areas for the next legislature, including strengthening the medical workforce, including a renewed collective agreement and fair conditions across all doctors.

It also called for investment in infrastructure, particularly the expansion of emergency services at Mater Dei Hospital, as well as recognition of mental health as a national priority with immediate and long-term investment.

The association further pointed to the need for reform of primary care, ensuring proper resourcing and workforce planning, alongside improved procurement systems and access to treatment.

It also stressed the importance of the development of a fully integrated digital health system.

MAM said that these measures are essential to strengthening patient safety, improving service efficiency, and retaining medical talent within the public health system.

The association reiterated its commitment to political independence, adding that it does not endorse any political party but will continue to engage constructively with all stakeholders in the interests of both patients and its members.
