The government has officially launched the National Sexual Health Strategy 2026-2030, outlining a series of measures aimed at strengthening sexual and reproductive health services, prevention and rights in Malta and Gozo.

Speaking during the launch on Friday, Health and Active Ageing Minister Jo Etienne Abela said the strategy is based on evidence and a human rights approach, in line with guidelines issued by the World Health Organization.

Abela said that while progress had been achieved through Malta's first national sexual health strategy, new challenges had emerged over time, requiring a coordinated response.

The strategy includes a number of measures that are already being implemented, including the strengthening of genitourinary services through the GU Clinic, wider access to HIV and sexually transmitted infection testing, as well as the free introduction of PrEP and the extension of the PEP service.

The minister also announced that several modern contraceptive methods will soon be introduced free of charge, alongside a national condom distribution initiative.

Abela further revealed that transgender individuals will soon be able to be referred for gender affirmation surgery abroad through Malta's public health services.

The strategy was drawn up following a public consultation process involving government entities, civil society organisations and members of the public. According to the government, the feedback received helped create a more inclusive strategy focused on the real needs of people living in or visiting Malta.

Abela appealed for continued collaboration among all stakeholders to further strengthen sexual health as an important pillar of public health and social wellbeing in Malta.
