The Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works has announced the opening of a new free public car park in the concert area at Ta’ Qali, through an investment of €13 million.

Over recent months, the Malta National Park Unit, together with the Public Works Department, have been finalising works on the largest car park in Ta’ Qali, which forms part of the masterplan for this largest open space for Maltese and Gozitan families.

The car park, located next to the aviation museum, has space for 450 cars across two levels, including parking spaces for persons with disabilities. In addition, this car park is modern and equipped with state-of-the-art lighting systems, ventilation, modern lifts, stairways, as well as a smart parking system.

From a safety aspect, this car park will include fire lobbies with certified fire doors leading to all levels of the car park, fire detection systems, and also fire-fighting systems.

The Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, Chris Bonett, said that this project goes beyond being simply a car park because it forms part of the wider transport plan, Malta in Motion. He explained that “this car park will be replicated through similar projects in other towns and villages, which will then be connected to other places through a Park & Ride service, as is the case in Ta’ Qali, which offers direct routes to the University and Mater Dei, Mosta, and Rabat.”

Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia said that this Government had a vision for Ta’ Qali and recalled how this area, where the car park and concert area now stand, used to be an illegal concrete factory. He said that this free car park will continue to improve the experience for families and all those who visit this national park.

The Head of the Ta’ Qali National Park, Jason Micallef, said that “the construction of this two-level public car park, with capacity for 450 cars, is another link in a holistic plan and vision within the largest regeneration ever carried out at Ta’ Qali.”
