Maltese artist Noel Galea Bason, best known for designing the 1986 Maltese Lira coins and Malta's first Euro coin series in 2007, has died at the age of 71.
News of his passing prompted tributes from across the artistic community and from residents of Floriana, the town where he was born and raised, with many recalling his lasting contribution to Malta's cultural and national identity.
Galea Bason studied at the Lyceum before furthering his artistic education at Rome's prestigious Scuola dell'Arte della Medaglia, from where he graduated in 1978. He later joined the Malta Mint at the Central Bank of Malta, becoming the first Maltese artist entrusted with the design of the country's coins.
His artistic work became deeply intertwined with Malta's modern history. Beyond currency design, Galea Bason was responsible for numerous medals, sculptures, commemorative pieces and public monuments that marked important national events and personalities.
Among his most notable commissions were the stamps issued for Pope John Paul II's visit to Malta in 1990 and a monumental bronze relief commemorating the same papal visit. He also designed the Dom Mintoff monument in Castille Square, a prominent landmark honouring the former prime minister.
Galea Bason was frequently entrusted with the creation of official state gifts presented to visiting dignitaries. One of the most distinguished examples was a commemorative artistic piece presented to Queen Elizabeth II by former President Ċensu Tabone during the monarch's visit to Malta in 1992.
His work also extended into the financial and historical sphere, including a monument commissioned by Bank of Valletta depicting the history of Malta.
Throughout his career, Galea Bason held a number of exhibitions showcasing his artistic versatility, earning recognition for his detailed craftsmanship and ability to merge history, symbolism and national identity.
President Myriam Spiteri Debono paid tribute to the late artist, describing him as a man whose talent and artistic vision accompanied the country through important historical moments. She extended condolences to his family and friends.
