Transport Minister Chris Bonett has announced a major technological overhaul at the National Traffic Control and Data Centre aimed at modernizing the islands transport network. This investment serves as a cornerstone of the Malta in Motion plan and will transform the facility into a high tech hub for monitoring and managing transport across Malta and Gozo.

The center utilizes an extensive network of radars, cameras, and intelligent systems to collect real time data on vehicle flow and road movement. In the coming months, this data will be used to guide traffic management decisions and infrastructure interventions across the islands. Current work involves integrating various systems to allow artificial intelligence to manage traffic flow dynamically based on real time needs.

Part of this digital transformation includes the C-SAM project, which introduces specialized technology to improve road safety for cyclists and pedestrians. Additionally, Transport Malta is preparing for the arrival of high capacity servers to process data in line with the European ITS Directive and the National Access Point obligations.

Minister Bonett emphasized that integrating technology into transport management is essential for creating a modern, efficient, and sustainable mobility system. He noted that the center would soon assist in strategic decisions such as traffic diversions and infrastructure planning based on nationwide data. The project is currently in its testing phase and is expected to be fully operational within months.

Transport Malta CEO Kurt Farrugia highlighted that the investment covers both technology and human resources to ensure smarter traffic management. He explained that central software systems will provide a comprehensive view of road, public, and sea transport to allow for real time decision making. Kenneth Spiteri, Senior Manager at the center, added that the installation of more sensors and radars will allow traffic lights to become fully adaptive, automatically adjusting to traffic conditions under a single integrated platform.
