The National Statistics Office has said that it is postponing the publication of data related to government finance and unemployment until after the election, saying they coincided with the so-called day of reflection on the eve of the election.

The official NSO calendar indicates that the government finance data for January-April 2026 and unemployment statistics for April 2026 were to be published on 29 May, but these have been postponed till 3 and 4 June - after the election.

The NSO says that this is being done "in observance of reflection day".

Over the past months, statistics have shown that the government's total debt continue to shoot up, reaching record highs each time. While unemployment has been low in recent years, the last available statistics showed a slight increase in the number of workers registering for a job.

The last available statistics show that at the end of March 2026, Central Government debt stood at €11,415.9 million, an increase of €621.8 million when compared to 2025. By the end of March 2026, the Government's Consolidated Fund reported a deficit of €84.3 million.

The number of registered unemployed persons stood at 1,287 in March 2026, representing a year-on-year increase of 230 individuals compared to March 2025.
