ADPD has accused both Malta’s major political parties of prioritising votes over environmental protection, condemning what it described as “scandalous and irresponsible” promises linked to hunting and trapping policies.

In a statement, ADPD spokesperson and electoral candidate Mark Zerafa said recent comments by Economy Minister Silvio Schembri during an activity organised by the hunting federation FKNK demonstrated that the governing Labour Party was willing to overlook environmental offences in exchange for electoral support.

Zerafa alleged that Schembri had promised that fines imposed on individuals who breached hunting laws or harmed protected wildlife would be forgiven if Labour is re-elected. He argued that such remarks reflected a broader attitude within government, where environmental protection and biodiversity conservation are being sidelined for partisan interests.

ADPD also criticised the government’s recent decision to open the spring hunting season for turtle dove and quail, despite scientific evidence indicating that both species remain vulnerable. Zerafa said the administration ignored expert advice because it was unwilling to risk losing votes from the hunting lobby.

“The priority of this government is not safeguarding ecosystems and biodiversity, but safeguarding partisan interests,” Zerafa said.

The party also took aim at the Nationalist Party, after the party leader Alex Borg pledged during a mass meeting in Gozo that hunting and trapping traditions would continue to enjoy protection.

According to ADPD, Borg failed to address issues such as sustainability, environmental responsibility, and Malta’s obligations under international treaties and environmental laws.

ADPD said the comments by both major parties highlighted what it described as a shared “negative attitude” towards Malta’s natural heritage and biodiversity.

ADPD reiterated its commitment to environmental protection, promising to remain “a truly progressive voice” advocating for common sense policies and the safeguarding of Malta’s natural ecosystems and wildlife heritage.
