Strengthening local infrastructure and community spaces, the Public Works Department has completed 27 projects in collaboration with non-governmental organisations across Malta during the first eight months of the year, the government said Tuesday. An additional nine projects are currently underway, bringing the total number of beneficiary organisations to 29.

Minister for Local Government and Public Works Alison Zerafa Civelli, alongside Director General for Works Perit Stephen Bonello, highlighted these ongoing efforts during a site visit to the Dominican Sisters Convent in Ħal Safi. Technical assessments at the convent revealed that water infiltration had severely compromised the safety of the stone lintels above the doors. The department carried out essential consolidation and specialized waterproofing treatments to permanently resolve the issue and ensure a safe environment for the community.

In addition to the convent, the department executed an extensive renovation project at the Ħal Safi Parish Centre, known as the Domus. Upgrades included structural reinforcements near the stage, modernized restrooms and corridors, courtyard refurbishments, new utility services, improved lighting, and the complete restoration of the facade and parapet walls. These enhancements transform the building into a safe, accessible, and welcoming hub for local residents and children's activities.

Parish Priest Ivan Scicluna and Safi Mayor Johan Mula joined the ministerial visit to express their gratitude for the tangible improvements made to local facilities. These initiatives underscore the government's ongoing commitment to investing directly in community spaces, ensuring that voluntary organisations are equipped with safe, modern, and functional venues to serve the public for years to come.
