Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi on Thursday marked his final day as a government minister, bringing to a close his career. The minister had announced his intention not to contest the election months before the date was established.
In a video Facebook post, Zrinzo Azzopardi thanked Labour Party supporters, constituents and colleagues for their trust and support throughout more than two decades of political involvement. He said the moment marked the end of his formal role in Cabinet, although he intends to remain active in public and professional life.
Zrinzo Azzopardi's political journey gained momentum following the Labour Party's 2013 general election victory, when he was appointed chairman of the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation. In that role, he was involved in overseeing regeneration and development initiatives aimed at revitalising the Grand Harbour area and surrounding localities.
His parliamentary career began in 2017 when he was elected to represent the fifth district. In his message, he described that election as a defining moment that allowed him to move from party and organisational roles into direct parliamentary responsibility. He was re-elected in 2022, continuing to serve the same district, which includes Birżebbuġa, Ħal Farruġ, Ħal Kirkop, Ħal Safi, Mqabba, Qrendi and Żurrieq.
In January 2020, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds under Prime Minister Robert Abela, a position he held until 2022. During this period, he was responsible for the coordination and management of EU-funded projects, including programmes linked to infrastructure, regional development and national investment priorities.
Following his re-election in 2022, Zrinzo Azzopardi became Minister for Public Works and Planning. During his tenure, he introduced reforms aimed at strengthening regulation in the construction sector, including the introduction of contractor licensing and tighter standards for demolition and building practices, measures intended to improve safety and accountability within the industry.
In his farewell message, he said his time in government allowed him to work closely with communities and deliver projects that had a visible impact on people's daily lives. He added that public service had always been driven by a sense of responsibility to improve living standards and respond to public needs.
Zrinzo Azzopardi also reflected on his earlier involvement within the Labour Party, including serving as party president in 2003, a role in which he pushed forward internal reforms during a period of organisational change.
He thanked residents of the fifth district, local councils, band clubs, associations and volunteers who supported him throughout his career, saying their encouragement had been central to his ability to serve effectively.
Zrinzo Azzopardi concluded by saying that although he is stepping away from ministerial office, he will continue to engage with people in different ways and remains grateful for the opportunity to have served Malta at various levels.
