The Electoral Commission has announced the opening of nominations for a series of casual elections to fill vacancies in the House of Representatives across eight electoral districts following the ceding of seats by elected Members of Parliament.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Commission said that the President of the Republic has formally commissioned it to conduct casual elections in districts 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12. The vacancies arose after the ceding of seats by Robert Abela, Ian Borg, Michael Falzon, Miriam Dalli, Clyde Caruana, Clifton Grima, Jonathan Attard and Chris Fearne.
The writ authorising the elections has been published in the Government Gazette, triggering the formal process to elect replacement MPs in the affected districts.
The Commission said that eligible candidates who contested the respective electoral districts in the General Election held on 30 May 2026 and were not elected may submit their nomination forms between Saturday 6 June and Wednesday 10 June.
Nominations will be accepted daily at the Electoral Commission's offices at the former Trade Fair Grounds in Naxxar between 9am and noon. Candidates may also obtain nomination forms from the Electoral Commission's offices in Valletta.
In addition to in-person submissions, candidates may file their nominations electronically through the Electoral Commission's website from 9am on 6 June until noon on 10 June.
The Electoral Commission also announced that the counting of votes for the casual elections will commence at 9am on Friday 12 June.
Casual elections are held under Malta's electoral system when elected candidates vacate one of the seats won in multiple districts, allowing eligible unelected candidates from the same party and district to contest for the vacant parliamentary seat.
