The Malta Tourism Authority organised an educational seminar aimed at strengthening the local tourism industry's understanding of the North American travel market, following the launch of Delta Air Lines' new direct service between New York and Malta.

Held at the Hilton Malta, the seminar brought together local tourism stakeholders, including representatives from four and five-star hotels, boutique accommodation establishments and Destination Management Companies (DMCs), together with internationally renowned experts from the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The initiative forms part of the Malta Tourism Authority's continued efforts to position Malta as a leading high-value destination, whilst providing the local tourism industry with the necessary knowledge to better cater for such emerging niches.

Addressing the seminar, Minister for Tourism Hon. Jo Etienne Abela highlighted the strategic importance of the North American market for Malta's tourism sector.

"The launch of the direct Delta Air Lines service between New York and Malta marks a significant step in our tourism journey and opens the door to a new generation of high-value visitors. However, connectivity alone is not enough. We must ensure that our tourism product continues to evolve by offering authentic, quality and sustainable experiences that meet the expectations of today's North American traveller. Initiatives such as this seminar are essential in preparing our industry to seize these opportunities."

Malta Tourism Authority Chairman Dr Charles Mangion emphasised the importance of collaboration and knowledge-sharing in strengthening Malta's tourism offering.

"As Malta continues to diversify its source markets, it is essential that we invest not only in promotion but also in education and market intelligence. By bringing together international experts and our local tourism operators, we are strengthening the sector's ability to adapt, innovate and continue delivering exceptional visitor experiences that reinforce Malta's reputation as a quality destination."

Malta Tourism Authority CEO Carlo Micallef noted that the seminar reflects the Authority's long-term strategy of attracting visitors who seek authentic and meaningful experiences.

"North America represents one of Malta's most promising strategic growth markets. Today's traveller is looking beyond traditional holidays and is seeking destinations that offer authenticity, culture, gastronomy, wellness and personalised experiences. Through this seminar, we are providing our industry with valuable insights that will help align Malta's tourism product with the expectations of this discerning market. This ensures that the opportunities created by the new direct Delta connection translate into long-term sustainable growth."

The seminar featured presentations by distinguished international speakers, including Terry Dale, President of the United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA), Bryan Kinkade, Vice President and Publisher of AFAR, Javier Guillermo, Director of Global Alliances at Virtuoso, and Abelardo Marcondes, CEO of LuxuryLab Global.

Discussions focused on North American travel trends, luxury tourism, consumer behaviour, distribution channels and the evolving expectations of travellers seeking authentic, experiential and sustainable destinations.

The Malta Tourism Authority continues to invest in strategic partnerships, market intelligence and industry development initiatives aimed at positioning Malta as a destination of excellence within the North American market, ensuring that the recent launch of direct connectivity serves as another key pillar for quality tourism growth and increased economic value for the Maltese Islands.
