Government on Wednesday said that it is taking another important step to strengthen the independence of specialised tribunals.

A statement said that Minister for Justice, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima met with the delegation from the Venice Commission, after government requested expert advice on the proposed reform.

Minister Grima thanked the Venice Commission for accepting Malta's request and for coming to Malta to discuss the reform.

Grima emphasised that government is turning commitment into action.

He said that Malta has reviewed the current system, prepared draft legislation and is advancing this reform, as is also promised in government's manifesto for this legislature.

The aim is to ensure that specialised tribunals continue to serve the public with the right expertise, while operating under rules that continue to strengthen their independence.

The Ministry for Justice, Research and Innovation said it looks forward to continuing its cooperation with the Venice Commission.
